Well guys, apparently I didn't post last week? Who knew...
Last week I observed on Tuesday the 18th. It was a B day and I haven't spent really any time with those students yet so it was all new to me. For some reason I don't like these kids as much as the A day kids. But I'm sure that will change once I spend more time with them. All classes are still in the midst of working on projects so this day was spent helping students at their seats.
Mrs. Limbaugh usually lets me take over answering questions so that she can get some work done at her desk. This week was also Spirit Week and on Tuesday all the students were dressed in their Halloween costumes.
This week I was there my usual times on Tuesday and Thursday. The student's that I have been supervising while they worked on the solar system mural are almost finished. They were doing detail work and I think Mrs. Limbaugh was going to finish it on Friday during the inservice day. I did a critique with the 7th grade classes on Tuesday. Dr. - came to observe. It was interesting. I think it went fairly well. The students were very talkative and did not want to be still. Mrs. Limbaugh had me sit them down for the 2nd time around and that definitely worked better. The students were at least pretty interested in talking about the paintings and answering my questions. It was a good learning experience and I would do some things differently next time. On Thursday, Mrs. Limbaugh had a small altercation with a 7th grade male student. She told him to get out of her classroom and then sent him to the office.
I am getting close to my 50 hours!

Emily Week 6
October 24th: 4 hours
Semester Total: 43 hours
This week, Ms. Hart was sick while I was supposed to teach two of my lessons. So I spent most of the morning trying to figure out what was happening with her 3, 4, and 5 grade classes. When a related arts teacher is absent at Calhoun, they split the classes between the other related arts classes. So half of the class would go to dance, and the other half of the class would either go to gym or theater.
While I was with Caryn, I just observed the normal K, 1 and 2 graders that I normally see. Kindergarden made spiders out of yarn and pipe cleaners, 1st graders drew a flower and labeled all of their parts to use as a key when the study flowers in a couple of weeks. 2nd grade finally finished their landscapes, and then Caryn drew a castle with the class to relate to their study of buildings. The kids really seem to enjoy that type of drawing. Where Caryn will instruct them to draw something in steps following her. They were very quiet and well behaved for this part of the lesson because they didn't want to miss out on an essential part of the castle. Because she breaks down how to draw it into many different steps, the results they get are much better then they would be if she had just instructed them to draw a castle by themselves. They were also reminded of foreground middle ground and background while drawing the castle and its surroundings.

HPE- 4 hrs
WES-2.5 hrs
This is a few days late. Last week I visited HPE twice and WES once. I mostly helped Ms. Ervin by doing prep work for her classes that week. I was handed a book and given some instructions and told to teach on ghosts to a K-5 class on Monday. It was a little rough since I hadn't completely thought it all out. I hashed out the official lesson later in the week since Mrs. Roberts was able to come view me on Friday at Wright. When I taught the lesson officially on Friday things went very smoothly. The K-5 class there is much more behaved than my HPE groups. Mrs. Roberts debriefed with me after the lesson and said I was a natural in the classroom. She didn't have any criticism to offer other than it went great. She did show up late (due to getting lost which is easy to do) and was unable to see the beginning of the lesson. I wished she could have been there because we did a review of the last lesson on lines. I enjoy teaching with Ms. Ervin, the kids have been great.
This Week 10/24-10/28 I will not be making my normal visits due to being ill Monday and Tuesday plus HPE has a major virus going around that has landed several students in the hospital. DHEC is requiring all shared items to be cleaned before and after each use with Clorox. In the art classroom as we all know this means everything. She advised me take the week off and plus the kids are out on Friday.

Emily Week 5
First of all, let me apologize for this being late. Stupid me published my post to MY blog, and just realized it. Oops.
Monday, October 17th: 7 hours
Semester Total: 39 hours
This week, Kindergarden finally finished their Van Gogh flower vases! There were a couple of students that were absent the week before, so I helped to catch them up while Caryn was finishing the projects with the rest of the class. First grade finished their self portraits in like ten minutes, so their next assignment was to draw s portrait of someone else. Caryn went over what portraits were before cutting them loose. Second grade was finishing coloring in their landscape, and then cut out all three locations (urban, suburban and rural). There were a lot of students that weren't paying attention, and didn't realize that they would be cutting off the sky in both the urban and suburban landscape.
During third and fifth grade, I finally felt like I was helping Ms. Hart instead of just walking around observing the students. All of the art show pieces were about to get sent in, and Ms. Hart had me organize a couple of classes, and write the students name and other information down for the framing company. While 4th grade was working on finishing up their gardens of flowers that I started last week, I was cutting out flower petals from the comments parents, faculty and staff had made about the students performance last week. The first grade made flowers similar to Georgia O'Keefe, and they were hung as the backdrop for the students dance that they performed. There were a couple of students that talked about the flowers and how they related to the dance. So when the performance was over, anyone that attended could write a comment to the students on a yellow sheet of paper. There were enough comments for me to make 3 3ft wide flowers for Ms. Hart to hang in the hallway. Overall: Good Day!

Laura- week 8
Wednesday, October 19: 3.5 hours
total: 53.5 hours
Wednesday was a A-day, so I was at WHS during Mrs. Bishop's planning period and a drawing class. This was the drawing class's last day to work on their photorealism drawings, so all of the students worked really hard during the class. Most of the students knew what they needed to do to put the finishing touches on their drawings, but a few of the students were lost and were not close to being finished. Mrs. Bishop and I worked with these students to help them develop step-by-step plans to finish their drawings by the due date (Friday). One of the girls I worked with was really discouraged because she had A LOT to work on to finish the drawing. We had been telling her during the course of the project to work on the entire picture in layers, but this was overwhelming to her. On Wednesday, I talked with her and was able to help her to continue working on her drawing (she was not working on the drawing at all because she was so overwhelmed). To try to get her to do something with her drawing, I told her to focus on a smaller part of the drawing. I came back a few minutes later, and that area was almost finished! I hope she was able to finish the rest of the drawing.

Laura- week 7
Friday, October 14th: 5 hours
Semester total: 50 hours!
Today was a B-day at WHS, and I was able to be there during the drawing class and the claymation class. The drawing class continued to work very hard on finishing their photorealistic drawings. At the beginning of class, I helped the students take pictures of their drawings. Then the students had 1 hour to be able to make a major impact on their drawing and cover a lot of ground because at the end of class, I helped the students take updated pictures of their drawings. It is really exciting to be able to see the students get excited about their drawings. While the students were working, I met with each student and helped them with their drawings. During the claymation class, the students wrapped up their advertisment project by completing the self-evaluations. Then they had to rate other students' movies, including the movies from the other 2 claymation classes. I worked the projector and the computer to play each movie. We only got through 10 movies because I played each movie 3 times to allow the students to be able to efficiently fill out the rubrics.
I talked with Mrs. Bishop today about my next lesson. The drawing classes will be working on Georgia O'Keeffe drawings next, so I will be introducing that project to them. This is really exciting because I actually did this same project when I was a student at Wren! Mrs. Bishop rotates her projects over the years, and she wanted to bring it back this year. My lesson will focus on introducing O'Keeffe, her works, and her style, and then I will do some exercises with the students to make sure they understand the main idea behind the project. I will be teaching this on Wednesday, November 2nd at 12:00 if anyone will be able to see me teach. I will also email all of you... :)

Emily Week 4
Monday 10-10-11: 7 hours
Semester Total: 32 Hours
On Monday, I once again observed Caryn on the front end, and Ms. Hart on the back end. Although, I taught Ms. Hart's 4th grade class. They were creating their white iris compositions using composition paper with information for the art show. For the most part, I think the students responded and listened well. I did a quick demonstration on how to overlap flowers and or leaves, and I also did a small demonstration on how to use two different colors on the flowers to give them more color depth. Most students understood this concept of using two colors, and only a few didn't. I think it might have been the students that weren't paying attention didn't understand what to do with the two colors. This was my fault. I should have made sure that everyone was paying attention before I did the demonstration, rather then rushing through it because of time constraints. All in all, I felt more comfortable in front of the students then I ever have. I think it was because of how often I see that one group of kids.

Unlike many of you I have been moving at a slower pace with my hours due to the wedding but have the rest of the semester mapped out in order to conquer them. This week I visited with Ms. Ervin at Honea Path and Wright.
The Honea Path 4th grade was making dolls that relate to the native American cultures they have been studying in Social Studies. This is a project that has taken 3 weeks to complete. They really enjoyed making their dolls. The kids have learned a lot about Native Americans through this project.
Today I observed Ms. Ervin teach a chaotic 6th grade class about the Day of the Dead in Mexican culture. The class created skeletons interacting in normal day affairs and they will complete them by coloring them next class. I taught the second class (5th grade) the same lesson and felt pretty good about it. I will I was better at pronoucing Spanish.
Today I also formally taught the K-5 class about "Wild Things". We had a blast. The kids were very receptive. We learned about Wild versus calm lines. We read Where the Wild Things Are and paused mid book to act like wild things and play wild music. The students stopped when I said stop (proabably should be louder next time) and sat back down to complete the story. Afterwards we learned about lines and discussed how to make our wild things. The requirement was to use 2 colors, 2 types of wilde lines and to make sure the head was around both pre-glued wiggle eyes. Everyone seemed to follow all the instructions. It was a fun lesson and very interactive. The students really comprehended the wild/calm lines too!

Elizabeth-week 5
Tuesday October 11th: 4 hours 15 minutes
Thursday October 13th: 4 hours 15 minutes
Total: 24 hours 45 minutes
This week I'm early! And I'm almost half way there!
Tuesday in the 8th grade sections I went with the students who are working on the solar system mural to supervise their progress. The 7th grade sections began there landscapes and many of them didn't bring in their homework. We spent a majority of the class looking through magazines to find landscapes for all of them. The seventh grade sections are the students I have gotten to know the best. They are my favorite.
Today I went with the 8th grade mural students again. They are making progress but they are also making a mess. Mrs. Limbaugh has decided to only let 3 of them continue in the process. In Mrs. Limbaugh's 7th grade sections I demonstrated brush techniques and how to clean your brush. The students have small landscapes that they began painting. We are enforcing that nothing is ever just one solid color! The students are excited about painting but they need a lot of help. There was a chorus of, "Ms. Frye and Mrs. Limbaugh's" today. Today the students were being screened for scoliosis and eye exams. They are always taken out of their related arts classes, so we didn't have much time with any of the classes today.
I am starting to feel more comfortable with the students in Mrs. Limbaugh's room and I am looking forward to next semester as well.

Wright Elem. School
9:00-10:45
9/23/11
Sorry this is late. September 23rd was my last visit to Wright Elementary School due to getting married and celebrating with a honeymoon. Starting this week I will be visiting Honea Path and Wright almost daily to ensure I get all my hours in. Thankfully the schools are both only a few minutes away from my new home.
On 9/23 I observed 5th grade and Kindergartners. The Kindergartners we finishing up their geometric people. Ms. Ervin knowing I adore the younger children allowed me to assist quite a bit with this instructional lesson. I assisted one student who was not able to keep pace with his peers. I had to handle a child marking with a marker on another student's forehead. I took the marker away and got the marked child cleaned up. The 5th graders were much more calm. The school recently had 6th and 5th grade switch time slots so I will rarely see 6th grade anymore for this semester. The 5th grade class was working on painting line drawings similar to the previous 6th grade class i had observed.
I will teach one of Ms. Ervin's lessons this Friday at 9:45 at Wright Elementary School if anyone is interested in observing me. I will teach the "Wild Things" lesson and read "Where the wild Things Are". See you all in class soon.

Laura- week 6
Wednesday, October 5th: 5 hours
Friday, October 7th: 3 hours
Week total: 8 hours
Semester total: 45 hours
Don't worry Elizabeth- you are not alone :) I just scheduled events for Friday nights on my phone to make sure I blog every Friday night!
I taught my second lesson this week to the A-day drawing class. The students have been working on photorealistic pencil drawings for the past month, and my lesson was about a mid-point critique for their drawings. Most of the students had never participated in a critique before, so I was starting from scratch with most of the students. I started with a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the lesson. The presentation included subjects such as what is a critique?, why do we need a critique?, what is a mid-point critique?, in what way should comments be formed and said?, etc. Throughout the presentation, I would have the students comment upon certain subjects or answer questions. After the presentation, the students critiqued their peers' works. Each student commented on two works and used positive comments and analysis for one work and constructive criticism for the other work. After they wrote down their critiques on pieces of paper, the students shared their critiques about each work as a class. I took pictures of each work with the source photograph beside it, and projected the pictures on the SMARTBoard. The students would comment upon the works as they appeared on the screen.
Overall, I believe that the critique went very well. The class can sometimes be really quiet and sometimes be really talkative. Luckily (yes, luckily!) they were really talkative for the critique. I would rather the students have a lot to say and be excited about the lesson than have nothing to say. Their comments were very detailed, on-task, and mostly helpful for the other students as we talked about their works. Some students were more talkative than others, and some of the comments were not helpful or valid for really helping the other students. On the first day of the critique, I tried to control this by limiting the number of comments about each work. On the second day of critique, Mrs. Bishop and I developed a different way to do this. Before the critique, I gave each student three strips of paper for them to write their names on. These three strips symbolized the three comments that they were each limited to for the critique. As they raised their hands to make a comment, I would take one of their paper strips. This helped limit the "talkers" to make sure that their comments are truly valid and helpful to the other students. The other students still did not talk much, so I really worked to encourage those students to talk. I believe that if I had this strategy in place for the first day, more of the students would have talked and used their paper strips.
I am very happy with how the critique went. The students really enjoyed being able to talk about the other students' works, and most really liked the positive and helpful comments from their peers. I could tell that some of the students feelings were being hurt sometimes, so most of my job during the critique was to be encouraging, twist negative comments into positives, and to keep the critique progressing and on task. I am really excited to see how the students will take the advise that they received during the critique and apply it to their drawings.

Elizabeth-week 4
Thursday: 5 hours and 15 minutes
Total: 16 hours and 15 minutes
Late again...I'm having a hard time remembering what day it is.
This week I observed both 8th grade sections and both seventh grade sections. Mrs. Limbaugh had me go with several students during each 8th grade section to one of the science teacher's classrooms. These students are working on painting a mural of the solar system on one of the walls in her classroom. They are in the process of painting the planets white so that they can then paint them fluorescent colors. The wall is mostly black so the paint doesn't show up well. These students have been working pretty slowly so Mrs. Limbaugh sent me with them to make sure they were working and not just missing class. In one of the 7th grade sections we watched a video on 1, 2 and 3 point perspective. After that Mrs. Limbaugh had me working on some of the students art work to get it ready to display in the library. She displays a lot of the work there and I really like it because the school has an opportunity to see what the art students are doing.
I am a little behind on my hours because of my brothers wedding. However, I still have it planned out to get them all in!

Emily Week 3
Monday: 7 hours
Wednesday: 1 hour
Semester Total: 25 hours
This week I was at Calhoun on Monday, and on Wednesday, I followed Caryn to Southwood Middle which is now becoming Southwood Academy of the arts. Only sixth grade has been integrated into the arts program right now, and then next year they will add seventh. The sixth graders meet every day for 50 minutes in the afternoon. So it's not like a typical art class only meeting once a week. When I went, the students were starting a new project on color wheels. Caryn was telling me that when she started the semester, she gave the students an art quiz to see how much they knew and didn't know. She said that most everyone knew what primary colors were, only about half knew what secondary colors were, and only a couple of students knew the order of colors on a color wheel, as well as tertiary colors and color mixing.
Calhoun 1-5 grade have all started new projects. 1st grade is working on self portraits inspired by Van Gogh for the art show. They are using oil crayons and manilla paper. 2nd grade is working on a landscape. They are integrating geography into their foreground middle and background using construction paper. 3rd grade is working on their "Starry Night" inspired pictures for the art show. The students learned how to make a 3D box for houses and are learning a little about composition as they place bushes and trees around their houses. 4th grade is working on their "White Iris" inspired pictures for the art show. They learned how to draw multiple different kinds of flowers and this week will be choosing one they drew best to create a flower garden. The students will focus on overlapping and color depth. 5th grade is also working on a Van Gogh inspired piece for the art show. They are creating their own chair that expresses themselves.

Laura- week 5
Wednesday, September 28: 4.5 hours
Friday, September 30: 3.75 hours
Week total: 8.25 hours
Semester total: 37 hours
So sorry I forgot to blog on Friday! Friday was crazy because it was homecoming week at Wren, so I was there for the parade, pep rally, and football game.
This week the drawing class continued to work on their pencil photo-realism drawings. Some of the students fully grasp the concept of the project and are working diligently on their drawings; the other students are still struggling on the project but for different reasons. Some of the struggling students are starting to come around because they are beginning to see their drawings progress in a positive way, and they are getting excited about what they are creating. I will be doing a mid-point critique in the other drawing class this coming Wednesday, and I am really excited to get the students to discuss their own work and their peers' works.
The claymation class worked on finishing their first movies. Wednesday was the students' last day of filming, and on Friday, the students worked on adding music and sounds to their movies. Some of the groups are very focused during class, and they finished their movies on Friday, but there are other groups that did not focus during both of the classes, and now they have to come after school to finish their movies. During the next class, the students will get to gather with their new groups and work on their new movies. At the end of next week once all of the students have finished their movies, they will have a "movie day" to watch and rate all of the movies.
